Not sure which Honda hybrid SUV suits your lifestyle? Explore the HR-V, ZR-V and CR-V, comparing space, technology, performance and efficiency.
Comparing lots of different cars to decide which best suits your lifestyle can be tricky, so let’s look at the three Honda hybrid SUVs to see which is right for you.
The HR-V explained
First up is the smallest of the three Honda SUVs, the HR-V. This premium hybrid crossover SUV bridges the gap between a traditional car and the higher ride height of an SUV. It’s compact enough to confidently drive around the city or country lanes yet has enough space to be practical without the worry of it being too big to park, thanks to the rear-view camera and 8 parking sensors.
The outside is stylish and modern whilst inside there’s lots of thoughtful features such as heated front seats, smart keyless entry, auto headlights and windscreen washers, as well as a host of safety features such as collision mitigation braking and lane departure warnings. All of these mentioned features come as standard on every grade of HR-V but if you’re after some extra gizmos, there’s plenty of additional options such as a panoramic glass roof, wireless phone charging, power tailgate and multi view cameras for ultimate visibility. And because the HR-V is a self-charging hybrid, there’s no stopping to plug-in and charge your vehicle.
The ZR-V – a sportier, slightly bigger SUV
At about 20cm longer than the smaller HR-V, the ZR-V is the mid-sized hybrid SUV in the Honda range. It hits the sweet spot for mixed driving and versatility, offering everyday practicality whether you’re commuting to work, driving the kids around or just pootling to the shops. Like all of Honda’s SUVs, the higher driving position gives an enhanced view of the road and incoming traffic and is super easy to get in and out of meaning no more stooping down to buckle the kids in!
From the outside it’s sporty looking, with a rear spoiler and striking twin exhausts, whilst inside there’s a bit more space with some luxurious options such as rear heated seats on selected grades. Like the HR-V it’s a self-charging hybrid, giving you convenience of both a petrol engine and electric motor.
The CR-V – the largest, premium SUV
Honda’s largest and most premium SUV is the much-loved CR-V which offers an elevated, refined driving experience. Loved by millions across the world, the CR-V has the space and flexibility needed for family-friendly driving. Unlike the other two models, the CR-V is available as a full hybrid as well as a plug-in hybrid, letting you choose which best fits your lifestyle, with the plug-in hybrid giving you the option of a purely electric-powered 50-mile range*. Inside the bright, spacious interior offers reclining front and rear seats, and ample leg room for everyone, as well as a large, wide-opening boot that takes family life – and everything it throws at you – in its stride. And as you’d expect, there’s some special touches too such as a panoramic glass roof and even cooling front seats on selected grades.
Power comparison
Every Honda SUV pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor, combining responsive performance with hybrid efficiency.
The agile HR-V uses a 1.5-litre engine, while the larger ZR-V features a more powerful 2-litre engine and accelerates from 0-62mph in under 8 seconds. The CR-V also uses a 2-litre petrol engine, and the e:PHEV offers a dedicated tow mode on selected grades, making it well suited to anyone who needs to tow a trailer or caravan.
If you’re considering a CR-V, you’ve the choice of a plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) or a full hybrid (e:HEV), with the plug-in hybrid suiting drivers who want to charge at home or on the go, while the e:HEV is ideal for those who prefer a self-charging hybrid which eliminates plugging-in.
Picking the right SUV for your lifestyle
The choice between the different models often comes down to your space requirements. If you’re forever weighed down with sports kit, bikes, pushchairs and shopping it’s worth investigating the CR-V which offers the largest boot of the three SUVs, making it perfect for families and anyone who relishes the extra room. For those wanting a more compact SUV without compromising on space, the HR-V is a great choice as the rear seat base cleverly flips up thanks to Honda’s Magic Seats, maximising the space in the passenger footwell to transport taller items that need to be vertical, like plants – perfect if you like to go wild at the garden centre!
