The number of electric car charging stations in the UK is growing at a rapid rate with hundreds of new connections being added every month. With over 6,000 EV charge stations installed across the UK at the time of writing, it’s little wonder the electric car is gaining popularity. Looking to the near future, electric cars are only going to become a more enticing proposition, particularly in light of recent news.

In September 2018, Theresa May spoke to the UK’s first Zero Emission Vehicle Summit, stating that she wants the UK to be a world leader in low emission technology.

The rise of fuel prices has seen a surge in electric vehicle sales in the UK, accounting for one in every 12 new cars purchased. Indeed, there are plenty of energy-efficient will be released across Europe in the coming months, including Honda's much talked-about Honda e. The car, in its iterations from Urban EV Concept, to e Prototype and the production model has been picking up the plaudits, including a ‘Best Concept Car’ award and a WhatCar 'Car of the Year' award.

As well as Honda e, Honda is also hard at work in the area of electric vehicle charge stations. The exciting new technology may well prove to be a serious game changer for those hoping to do their electric car charging at home. Situated at Honda’s R&D facility in Germany is Europe’s most advanced public electric vehicle charging station.

Using state-of-the-art 940V technology, the electric car charging station allows up to four vehicles to charge simultaneously with different types of connectors. The EV charge station is powered by renewable energy sources and can deliver up to 150 kW of energy across 4 connections at any one time. This 940V capability enables new possibilities, tying in nicely with the ‘Electric Vision’ strategy of Honda.

The bi-directional charger works by returning energy to the grid whilst the car is charging, which will help to stabilise the grid at times of short energy supply. By developing this innovative system, Honda have taken big steps towards a zero-emission society.

What’s more, this hardware will be made available to private households in the future, making electric car charging at home quicker and easier than ever. This news follows the announcement of the Honda Power Manager which made its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. This fully-integrated energy transfer system is a smaller home version of the station in Frankfurt in that it manages energy between the grid, homes and electric vehicles, enabling the efficient usage and storage of energy.

Honda’s electric car charging station is just one of many projects in the pipeline. As the technology continues to develop, the electric car will surely only continue to grow in popularity, attracting car buyers who are looking to save the environment as well as some money!
