BEYOND THE PITCH

Stories of Strength, Passion and Purpose

We recently had the privilege of meeting three remarkable athletes from the England Red Roses squad, and we're proud to share BEYOND THE PITCH — a powerful series that delves into their personal journeys to the top of their game.

In candid conversations with Abbie Ward, Amy Cokayne, and Helena Rowland, we explore the rise of women’s rugby through their eyes — stories of resilience, determination, and unwavering pride. From overcoming personal challenges to representing their country on the world stage, these players reveal what it truly takes to break boundaries, both on and off the pitch.

ABBIE WARD

Abbie talks openly about the challenge of balancing the role of an International sportsperson alongside being a mother but also draws the positive changes in the sports industry to ensure support for women returning to their professional after maternity leave.

Abbie reflects on how far the game has come for the Red Roses, recalling how initially there was 50 spectators to now over 50,000.  The increase in support for Women’s rugby has been a huge increase in investment in women’s sport.

I love being a mum in a rugby world, I'm very fortunate that my daughter has so many amazing role models around her." Abbie Ward

AMY COKAYNE

Amy’s passion for the sport is apparent when she talks about the sacrifice that is needed to make it to the top in international sport. Amy took time away from rugby to complete her Royal Air Force training and combines her international duties with her career.

I think military life and rugby life crossover quite well, the different values they have in terms of discipline, leadership, commitment, communication, there's a really nice crossover." Amy Cokayne

HELENA ROWLAND

Her journey started by playing at the Aylesbury rugby club where she started enjoying rugby but it wasn’t until the 2014 World Cup Final in France, which she watched with her dad, that she truly saw her future in Rugby.

The journey hasn’t been without setbacks. A major injury in New Zealand tested her both mentally and physically but this only made her appreciate the moments on the pitch and bounce back from the setbacks!

To be out on that pitch, to be wearing the England shirt, I think is a hugely proud moment." Helena Rowland
