How to service and maintain your electric car

Vehicle maintenance is a key part of owning any car. However, EVs are designed with cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art components, meaning electric car maintenance tends to be cheaper compared to the upkeep of petrol and diesel cars.

Find out all about electric car servicing in this helpful guide.

What needs servicing on an electric car?

There are a few elements in particular that will need to be examined during your electric car servicing appointment. These include:

Electric motor

With no more than 20 components on average, an electric motor has fewer parts than the combustion engines found in petrol and diesel cars. This means that less maintenance is required. During your electric car service, the motor will be checked for any abnormal noises, which may highlight any wear and tear.

Battery

Again, like their motors, EV batteries require little maintenance as they have no moving parts. The mechanic will check performance, and any damage will show up in the data. If you want to reduce the chance of damaging your battery cells, there are a few things you can do, such as:

• Avoiding extreme temperatures
• Slow charging instead of rapid charge when you can
• Using the car regularly

Oil and Coolant

As electric cars don’t use engine oil, no oil changes are required. EVs use completely different drivetrains, so you’ll never have to worry about routine oil changes. Your electric car relies on coolant that flows through the thermoregulation system to prevent the batteries from overheating. This only needs to be checked and topped up if necessary, but unlike petrol and diesel cars, it never needs to be changed.

Brakes

One of the most innovative features of electric cars is their regenerative braking. This is used alongside conventional brakes and makes braking more efficient, resulting in less wear and tear. Occasionally, the brake pads and discs may have to be replaced - but this is the case with any vehicle.

Tyres

Electric cars, typically heavier than combustion-fuelled vehicles due to the weight of their batteries, require specific types of tyres to manage this additional weight and their accelerating power. Maintenance of these tyres is key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of your EV. This maintenance includes regular rotations as indicated in the owner’s manual, maintaining the correct tyre pressure, and replacing tyres when they become worn.

It is important to note that the minimum legal limit for tyre tread depth in Europe is 1.6mm. However, in addition to tread depth, the age and production date of the tyres should also be considered. Tyres degrade over time, even if they're not used. This degradation can affect their performance and safety. Therefore, it's recommended to check the production date of your tyres and consider replacing them if they are over a certain age, typically around five to six years, regardless of their tread depth. Regularly scheduled services should include an assessment of tyre age, along with tread depth checks, to ensure optimal performance and safety of your electric vehicle.

How often do electric cars need to be serviced?

Typically electric cars will need servicing every 12 months. However, this can vary depending on the model, driving conditions and annual kilometrage.

Routine tasks like checking tyre pressure, lights and coolant fluid levels, will need to be performed periodically. You’ll be able to find your specific vehicle’s maintenance schedule in the owner’s handbook, or you can contact your local dealer directly.

FAQs

Do electric cars need water?

Instead of water, electric cars require coolant. This flows through the thermoregulation system and stops the batteries from overheating. Coolant levels only need to be checked and topped up if necessary.

What happens if an electric car breaks down?

Always ensure that your electric car is charged up enough for your journey. If you run out of charge and break down, you should be able to get roadside assistance to come and charge it up for you. Please bear in mind that they may only be able to give you enough charge to get you to a proper charging station to fully refuel.

How long do electric car batteries last?

It’s estimated that EV car batteries can last from 10 to 20 years in total. Factors such as temperature and driving habits can have an impact on how long a car battery can last. Honda EV batteries come with an 8 year/160,000km warranty that guarantees at least a 70% usable capacity up till then.

Can you service an electric car yourself?

Always leave electric car maintenance to the professionals. You shouldn’t try to service your EV unless you’re trained to do so. A professional mechanic will have the tools and skills to check over your vehicle and ensure that it’s functioning to a high standard.

Do electric cars need oil changes?

No, electric cars do not require oil changes as they use different drivetrains. However, your EV will need the coolant, brake fluid and windshield washing fluid topped up regularly.

Maintenance Schedule

You can only charge a vehicle’s battery at the maximum charge rate the vehicle can accept. For example, if your vehicle’s max charge rate is 7kW, you won’t charge any faster by using a 22kW charge point. The time it takes to charge will also be limited by the max charging rate of the charge point you are using. For example, even if your vehicle can charge at 11kW, it will only charge at 7kW on a 7kW charge point.
