Motorcycles
Our long-standing commitment to improving the cleanliness of everything on four wheels extends to everything on two wheels too. It’s why we’ve been steadily changing our motorcycles and scooters over to more environment-friendly 4-stroke engines, and introducing electronically controlled fuel injection (PGM-FI).
What is PGM-FI?
PGM-FI stands for Programmed Fuel Injection. It is a computerised system that maintains strong power and responsive performance in all conditions whilst ensuring maximum fuel efficiency with minimum emissions. This has featured on many of our larger motorcycles for some years, but now every single on-road bike in our range uses this technology, from the 50cc Zoomer right up to the GL1800 Goldwing. In fact, even some of our Off-road machines now feature PGM-FI.
Next generation technology
We’re currently developing a Variable Cylinder Management system, based on automobile technology for large motorcycle engines, in combination with the Hyper VTEC system. This new system will enable the number of cylinders and valves activated to be variably controlled – delivering both higher fuel economy and superior performance.
We expect to introduce this new technology from 2010 – supporting our commitment to increasing the fuel economy of our larger motorcycles by approximately 30% over 2006 levels.
Noise regulations
All Honda motorcycles currently meet and exceed noise regulations. But that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped working to improve them further. We’re currently developing two environmentally responsible noise reduction technologies: a 3-part muffler to reduce exhaust noise and a 2-part air cleaner to reduce intake noise. You’ll see them first on our mid-range scooters, before we introduce them to our full range.
