A Journey Like No Other:

Celebrating 50 Years of the Honda Gold Wing

In the world of motorcycles, few names carry the weight, history, and reverence of the Honda Gold Wing. For half a century, the Gold Wing has defined two-wheeled luxury touring—evolving with the times while staying true to its core promise of comfort, performance, and innovation. As Honda Motorcycles UK celebrates the 50th anniversary of this legendary machine, we take a moment to look back at the milestones that brought us here—and forward to where the Gold Wing is headed next.

The 2025 Honda Gold Wing: Gold Standard, Redefined

As a fitting tribute to its golden anniversary, the 2025 Honda Gold Wing represents the pinnacle of long-distance touring engineering. This latest iteration retains everything riders love about the Gold Wing—refined power, intuitive handling, and cutting-edge features—while adding modern refinements and subtle nods to its heritage.

Powered by a 1,833cc flat-six engine, the 2025 model delivers smooth, effortless power delivery whether you're cruising the Highlands or cutting through the M6. The 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) has been further refined for even silkier gear transitions, and the suspension system-adjustable on the fly - keeps riders in complete comfort, even on unpredictable UK roads.

This year’s anniversary edition also introduces exclusive styling cues: a commemorative 50th Anniversary badge, updated colourways inspired by iconic past models, and subtle gold accents that reflect the machine’s milestone status. Inside, a full-colour TFT display, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration, and a refined audio system provide modern convenience for modern touring.

Whether it’s a solo tour or a two-up adventure, the 2025 Gold Wing proves that luxury and performance don’t have to be mutually exclusive - they can ride in perfect harmony.

Golden Moments: 50 Years of Gold Wing Glory

Since its debut in 1975, the Honda Gold Wing has forged an unrivalled reputation for luxury, performance, and innovation. What began as a groundbreaking 999cc touring motorcycle has grown into a global icon - shaped by decades of engineering excellence and inspired by the real-world journeys of riders across generations. From cross-country road trips in America to sweeping tours through Europe’s finest landscapes, the Gold Wing has defined what it means to ride in comfort, and in style.

The first-generation GL1000 was a revelation in its day. It introduced a flat-four engine with liquid cooling, shaft drive, and remarkable long-distance poise - all characteristics that would come to define the model. Honda wasn’t just building a motorcycle; it was building a platform for freedom. Just five years later, the 1980 GL1100 Interstate became the first Gold Wing to feature a factory-fitted fairing and luggage system. It was a major step forward, giving riders a complete touring package right out of the showroom - no aftermarket parts required.

As the Gold Wing entered the 1980s, it found its identity as the ultimate luxury tourer. The introduction of the Aspencade in 1982 brought premium upgrades such as on-board audio and air suspension, establishing a new standard for motorcycle comfort. These features weren’t just novelties - they were the foundation of long-haul endurance and enjoyment.

By 1988, Honda unveiled one of the most important evolutions in the Gold Wing’s lineage: the GL1500. With a new 1,520cc flat-six engine and a reverse gear, it made big touring bikes easier to live with and more powerful than ever. A smooth, near-silent ride became part of the Gold Wing signature. Honda even moved production to the United States, showing how serious it was about the Gold Wing’s importance to Western riders.

The turn of the millennium brought a major redesign with the GL1800 in 2001. Lighter, faster, and packed with tech, it introduced fuel injection, an aluminium frame, and unprecedented handling for a full-size tourer. It was during this era that the Gold Wing began to feel more like a two-wheeled Grand Tourer than a traditional motorcycle. Features like electronic cruise control, integrated GPS, and even an airbag system (first seen in 2006) pushed the boundaries of what riders could expect from a touring machine.

In 2018, Honda shook things up again with a ground-up redesign of the Gold Wing. The bike was made leaner, sharper, and smarter - equipped with a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), Apple CarPlay™, and a fully digital dashboard. It marked a shift toward a new generation of connected riders while staying true to the comfort and character long-time fans expected.

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary in 2025, the Gold Wing continues to evolve. The new anniversary edition pays homage to the past with special colours and commemorative badging, while offering the very latest in touring technology. The legacy of the Gold Wing isn't just written in its engineering milestones - it's carved into the memories of millions of riders who've trusted it to take them the distance.

Looking Ahead: The Road Continues

As we mark 50 years of the Gold Wing, it's clear this is more than just a celebration of the past - it's a springboard for the future. With Honda’s commitment to innovation, including hybrid and electric touring on the horizon, the Gold Wing will continue to lead the way in redefining what’s possible on two wheels.

To every rider who’s taken a journey on a Gold Wing - thank you. You’ve made the last 50 years legendary. Here’s to the next 50.
